Privacy Policy
RefProof · Last updated 2 October 2026
This policy explains what RefProof (the "plugin"), published by Auteur, collects when you use it inside ChatGPT, why, and what control you have.
What we collect and process
- The citation text, titles, authors, DOIs and URLs that ChatGPT sends for checking.
- Nothing is stored: each check runs and the results are returned to you.
ChatGPT sends us an anonymous user identifier with each request. We never receive your name, e-mail address or chat history. We store only a one-way hash of that identifier so your saved items stay yours. We do not ask for or accept passwords, payment details, government identifiers or health records.
Why
Only to perform the action you asked the plugin to do and to show you the result. We do not sell data, show ads, build advertising profiles, or use your content to train models.
Who receives it
- Crossref and OpenAlex (public scholarly registries) receive titles, DOIs and author names to look up records.
- Open Library receives book titles or ISBNs.
- The website you cite receives one request to confirm the link works, and the Internet Archive receives the URL to find an archived copy.
- CourtListener (Free Law Project) receives case citations, when case checking is enabled.
How long we keep it
We don't store citation data. It is processed in memory and discarded when the check finishes. Server logs that may contain IP addresses are kept by our hosting provider for up to 7 days for security.
Your controls
- Nothing to delete: RefProof keeps no record of what you check.
Children
The plugin is not directed at children under 13.
